BIG MORONGO CANYON PRESERVE: A serene oasis supporting 300 species of
plants and many animals. Noted wildlife sanctuary and bird watching site (more

COACHELLA VALLEY PRESURVE: 13,000 acre preserve contains clear springs,
dunes, bluffs, mesas, the spectacular Thousand Palms Oasis and abundant and rare
species of wildlife. Hiking and riding trails, Visitors Center and picnic area.
No pets. Open daily sunrise to sunset, closed during August. Groups welcome. Located
ten miles east of Palm Springs near Thousand Palms. Take Ramon Rd. over I-10,

HOT SPRINGS PARK: Interpretive park with hot and cold water features,
a man0made fault line and a mini-grove showing how water is used in the desert.

LAKE CAHUILLA: A Riverside County park. Fishing, boating, pool swimming/lifeguard.
Apr-Oct., picnicking, camping, hiking. Lake stocked (license required). Non-motorized

PALM DESERT CIVIC CENTER PARK: Community park with an amphitheater,
tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, soccer field, skate park, canine commons,
tot lot, play areas and picnic pavilion. Site of the Palm Desert Community
Center and Family YMCA of the Desert. Many sculptures throughout the

PALM SPRINGS DOG PARK: Open around the clock, a spacious and green doggie
oasis with enclosed area for small dogs, brightly painted antique fire hydrants,
pooper scoopers and rakes. Dogs over 4 months must be vaccinated and licensed
to enter. For owners, there are picnic tables, benches, water fountains, trees

IDYLLWILD: A mountain community nestled in a pine forest with galleries,
hiking trails, restaurants, and shops. Idyllwild Arts (Academy and Summer Program),
offering workshops, concert, art exhibitions, theater and dance performances.
909-659-2171. Take I-10 to Banning, south on Hwy 243 to Idyllwild (about 90
minutes) or scenic Palms to Pines Hwy.
PALMS TO PINE HWY: A 130 mile scenic route crossing the deserts
forest and mountain resorts. Take Hwy 74 at Hwy 111 in Palm Desert to a fork
branching right to Idyllwild and Mountain Center. Continue into the San Gorgonio
Pass. Return via Hwy 243, I-10 and Hwy 111.
PIONEERTOWN: Forty minutes from Palm Springs via 29 Palms Hwy (62) to
Yucca Valley. Old West town built in the early 40s by Gene Autry and Roy
Rogers for filming of movies and TV serials. Today, the railroad-tie and adobe
structures are inhabited by "real" people with a post office, bowling
alley, motel and the Pioneertown Palace where a four-generation family provides
good food and live Western entertainment. Running Deer Theme Park with live animals,
picnic and campgrounds, RV parking, horse boarding, pony rides, museum, tours
